Why does a fork have four tines?

First of all, not every fork has four prongs – there are also forks with two or three prongs, used for different types of food according to the rules of etiquette. A three-pronged fork is still sometimes used for everyday meals, such as salads or fish.

A four-pronged fork is currently considered the standard for various types of dishes. However, it was not always the case before the widespread adoption of this solution in the 19th century. Previously, there were experiments with different types of forks, from two-pronged forks which were considered dangerous, to forks with even six prongs. It was simply recognized that four prongs are the most comfortable to use and at the same time safe.
