“What direction is the current flowing?”

Which direction does the current flow in? This is a very important issue, needed in many life situations. Let’s imagine an electrical circuit in which the positive and negative poles are marked. Conventionally, the current always flows from the positive pole to the negative pole.

However, let’s pay attention to the word “conventionally”. How does it look in practice? Usually, the direction of the current depends on what carries the current. For example, in metals, electrons are the carriers of the current, so their drift motion is opposite to the conventional direction of the current. In semiconductors, on the other hand, current carriers can be electrons and positive holes. In this situation, the holes create a current that is consistent with the direction of their motion, while the electron current has the opposite direction.

In conclusion, the practical direction of the current can be completely different from the conventional one, which is from plus to minus.
