What is the theory of literature?

Literary theory is a discipline whose aim is the objective systematization of literary phenomena. It is a branch of knowledge about literature that includes information about variations of the text, its structural and evolutionary regularities, and its connections with other scientific fields such as psychology and ontology. Unlike poetics and literary history, literary theory does not focus on the periodization of literary phenomena and on the structure of literary works. The concept of literary theory has been used since the 1960s.
