Sea buckthorn, also known as common sea buckthorn, belongs to the oleaster family. The plant is found in Europe and Asia. In Poland, it is particularly popular in coastal regions. The shrub has distinctive orange fruits that resemble rowan berries. It is these sea buckthorn fruits that are used in cooking, cosmetics, and herbal medicine.

Nutritional Value of Sea Buckthorn

Sea buckthorn fruits are known for their very high vitamin C content. It is estimated that 100g of berries contain from 90 to 200mg of vitamin C (in varieties found in Poland). These values ​​significantly exceed those of citrus fruits. This makes sea buckthorn an excellent ally in the fight against colds. It is also recommended for ailments related to vitamin C deficiency, such as weakness, muscle pain, or loss of appetite.

Sea buckthorn is also an excellent source of carotenoids, which have antioxidant properties and delay skin aging processes. Sea buckthorn fruits can provide nearly 40 types of carotenoids. Orange berries also contain flavonoids, which have anti-inflammatory, antibacterial, and antivirus effects.

The fruits are also a source of lipids, including omega-3, omega-6, and omega-7, which improve concentration and increase skin elasticity. Sea buckthorn is used, among others, in the treatment of hypertension, diabetes, and heart diseases.
